founders day welcome speech

Founders Day is always a significant day and I join you in paying tribute to those persons who through their own dedication and their tireless efforts brought this fraternity into being. But we are also an institution constantly looking for ways to expand the narrative. For the life of our campus: The percentage of Americans with a college degree increased to 6 percent in 1950, and then to about 10 percent by the mid-1960s when UMBC was founded. We are here today and we are who we are today because of many foundings and many founders. o We are an institution that can place teams in the top four nationally in mens soccer, chess, game development, and mini-Baja racing, all in one year! We must all work together for the good of the Fraternity. This year, nursing major Brooke Zahine '24 was selected to present It is always the result of high intentions, sincere effort, and intelligent execution. This past semester, I had the honor of attending initiation at UCF and leading the Bond reading to the new Fraters. Knowing full well that the mission of college training is to develop such traits, we were fully convinced that in the end-developing character, enriched life and enlarged personality-would justify any risk that might be taken in selecting such a man. As a collegiate Frater serving as an officer, we learn a sense of duty to our chapter and personal responsibility. For example, Kate Brown, professor of History, won seven prestigious national and international awards for her book, Plutopia, and has recently been named an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, a Fernand Braudel Fellow at the European University Institute, and a fellowship with the American Academy in Berlin. Part of any honest reflection on the past requires honoring the parts that fill us with pride and critically analyzing where we have fallen short. That day we had 750 students, 45 faculty members, 35 support staff, 3 new buildings, and 500 parking spaces. To set a new standard for what fraternity means. So today, I leave you with those wise words. TKE ideals and values endure through generations and connect our past to our future. She went on to explain how worried she was about his decision to join a fraternity and after not hearing from him for a period of time, she had thought he might be dead. Let me give a few examples. Over the past fifty years, as our nation has grown its higher education enterprise, many more Americans went to college and earned bachelors degrees, access to our postsecondary institutions was widened to people of all groups, and the federal government expanded its investments in university research. When we look ahead we are also inspired in two essential ways. In 1899, when TKE was born, our Founders started the Fraternity with the purpose of preparing men for the challenges of society, certainly a noble endeavor. They called themselves the Knights of Classic Lore. Celebrate with your fellow Fraters by sharing on social media the memories of your fraternal experience using #IAMTKE. WebOn the speech day, the production designer, who has a lot of say in things, and sometimes I didn't agree with him but I had to do what I was told, wanted the speech day to be all in neutral colours for the women, which was a good thing. Building relationships from Baltimore to Washington? o How can we develop closer connections with Catonsville and Arbutus and create a college town atmosphere? It was easier for us to do this by effecting an organization of a brotherly character for mutual helpfulness. These are key assets for our research, scholarship and creative achievement. It was our very first Grand Prytanis, Lester H. Martin, recalling his time with Founder Settles, who stated, "The idea, as it struck brother Settles, was not a Fraternity in the usual acceptation, but an organization for the development of men to fit them to cope with the world when their school days were over and they would be forced up against the stern realities of life.". Partnerships His doctoral student and postdoctoral fellow, Victoria DSouza, was granted tenure as full professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, Harvard University. o We are sending our students to the most prestigious graduate and professional programs in the country and our doctoral graduates hold faculty positions at research and comprehensive universities across the nation. We have many international partnerships, such as those with Kyushu University in Japan and Kassel University in Germany. These challenges have a deleterious impact on the Fraternitys ability to sustain the momentum we have created over the last several years. Being a TKE for Life means acting on our values to make a better life for you and those around you. The Fraternity's first-ever fundraising effort was a $300 campaign in 1908 for a piano for the Alpha chapter house. Our research motto, Innovation That Matters reflects the fact that our faculty and students are particularly strong in translational and applied research areas. o The latest one-year retention rate for full-time, first-time freshmen from the first to the second year is the highest ever at 87.2 percentwith little variation among racial/ethnic groups. Capital Projects Although we have experienced significant growth since 1944, the global pandemic has upended higher education on Americas college campuses and Tau Kappa Epsilon is once again facing an existential threat. For our first twenty years, UMBC played its original allotted role as an institution whose students were primarily commuters. Michael Hooker began to expand UMBCs aspirations at his installation as fourth chancellor in 1986 when he said, My [vision] is for UMBC to be a model university for the twenty-first century, and to be the best public university of its size in the country. Hooker argued that to capitalize on the universitys potential and make this vision a reality, the campus should: In so many ways, we've done just that. 8)Prize distribution. As responsible Fraters, we know we must constantly strive for excellence in our daily actions and demand the same from our fellow Fraters. If TKE is truly the Fraternity for Life, then the undergraduate years are merely a launching pad for life. Significantly, more than one thousand Tekes since June made their first gift to the TKE Foundation through Life Loyal Teke (LLT). I invite you to read Professor George LaNoues new book, entitled Improbable Excellence: The Saga of UMBC, which discusses our 50-year history and has many excellent observations about where we are today and about the challenges we will face in the future. And, most importantly as an educational institution with knowledge creation at our core we must learn from them. Our Declaration of Principles outlines that our purpose is to aid our men in their mental, moral, and social development. As a volunteer for the past 20 years, I have come to more fully understand how TKE honors the uniqueness of each Frater, the basis of our brotherhood. Joseph Settles took their advice and ran with it. According to current data from NSF, UMBC ranks #151 in federal research and development expenditures out of more than 3,000 four-year colleges or universities. We are providing academic initiatives, student affiliation opportunities, transfer student support, assistance for near-completers, and opportunities for the kind of real-world connections afforded through the Shriver Center, BreakingGround, and the Alex Brown Center for Entrepreneurship. On a parallel track, the federal-university partnershipwith funding from such new agencies as NSF, NIH, and NASAgrew significantly. So, six years after matriculating, 90 percent of students in the 2009 cohort had earned a postsecondary degree or were still enrolled in college. When you do so, you embody excellence, live our bond and showcase the value our Founders fought for in the early days of our formation. What inspired these men to our fraternal table? When Joseph Settles, James McNutt, Clarence Mayer, Owen Truitt, and C. Roy Atkinson gathered at 504 Locust Street in Bloomington, Illinois on January 10, 1899, and formed the Knights of Classic Lore they created a society whose avowed purpose was to aid men in their mental, moral and social development. Our mission to aid men in their moral, mental and social development for life has been present since our founding and has prevailed for 121 years. Together, they and we help define Wake Forests story. We are in the quiet phase of the capital campaign now, and we will launch the public phase for $150 million in the spring. Today, there may be no other time in our history where fraternities may be more relevant. Through the leadership of the TKE Foundation and its Chairman, James Crockard, we are more aligned than at any point in our history to grow the resources to advance the mission of our Fraternity. Corey Carter 08, biological sciences, 10 M.A.T., was selected as the Baltimore County Teacher of the year and Shalonda Holt 07, biological sciences, teaching certificate in education, was recognized by the Washington Post as Teacher of the Year after previously being selected as the Howard County Teacher of the year. Thats why Im proud of the important work being done by Wake Forests Slavery, Race, and Memory Project and particularly proud of our membership in the Universities Studying Slavery consortium. Our most successful and impactful research efforts are frequently interdisciplinary and based on successful collaborations across the campus, with other academic institutions, and with external partners. o Engineers without Borders extends what we learn on campus to those in need around the world. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, it is important to recognize how far we have come over the past 25 years with regard to information technology on campus. After WWII, all of this changed, quite dramatically. Frater Lester H. Martin, the first Grand Prytanis, was once quoted saying that our Founders set out to create an organization for the development of men to enable them to cope with the world when their school days were over and when they would be forced against the stern realities of life.. Budget and Endowment We are becoming a stronger and healthier organization by coupling our ever-present grit and determination with bold initiatives and an overarching commitment to excellence. Through these experiences and our educational programming, we are creating and fostering next generation leadership. We were in the top the top 20 nationally in research in these fields. There are other examples of more inclusive foundings that form all the parts of the Wake Forest story. Our infrastructure now includes, in addition to our buildings, an investment in information technology (IT). The National Academies, in Research Universities and the Future of America, argued that it is the role of these institutions to produce the new knowledge and educated citizens who will drive innovationadvances in ideas, products, and processes that create new industries and jobs, contribute to our nations health and security, and support a high standard of living. And so I think, for example, of the important research we are doing to increase understanding of AIDS, develop anti-cancer strategies, improve the aquaculture industry, environmental research, and contribute in such areas as the digital humanities, imaging and digital arts, and public policy. Over the last 122 years, Tau Kappa Epsilon has faithfully lived its mission. In order to fortify our existence and build a championship culture, we need to control our destiny through bold initiatives and progressive actions. TKEs mission is to aid men in their mental, moral and social development for life. I ask you on this Founders Day to reflect on your TKE experience and financially invest in the Fraternity that has taken us on such a wonderful ride. For my parents, life was about survival and college was mere a fairy tale of opportunity that people living in double-wide trailers did not get. Our legacy of fundraising is nearly as lengthy as our existence. Our dear Founder, we are honored to call AUN our home, and we celebrate with you today. WebEach day children participate in circle time, small and large group activities, independent playtime, story time and movement activities. UMBCs IT operations are now regarded as a model of innovation in higher education. Our values and viability have been tested in recent years. How are we going to rally together to ensure we become stronger? At our opening in 1966 Albin Kuhn said, Just like a youngster, we dont have all the answers, but we do want to develop our own personality and become part of the Baltimore metropolitan area. Over the next 20 years, after Dr. Kuhn had laid a solid foundation, the campus was steered through a challenging period of growth by Calvin Lee, UMBCs second chancellor; Louis Kaplan, interim chancellor; and John Dorsey, third chancellor. On this special day, I ask that you reflect on what brought you to TKE, what keeps you engaged in the Fraternity, and how you can give back. What is even more challenging is that while more than half of students from families in the highest income quartile earn a bachelors degree by age 24, only about one in 10 of those from the lowest income quartile do. A Private Liberal Arts University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina / Founded1834 / ProHumanitate. Furthermore, this year we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the founding of the LGBTQ+ Center on campus. White attainment was at 10.4 percent in 1977 and the percentage of non-Hispanic whites over 25 with a college degree in 2015 was 36.2 percent. o How high can we go with degree completion? Instead, we should confront them. I love the Fraternity. This is my first Founders Day on campus, as it may be for many of you, and Im delighted we can meet together in person. Our recommendations reflect our willingness to be honest with ourselves. Relatives and friends have buried children and others killed in a Russian missile attack on the central Ukrainian city of Uman. With nearly 12,000 collegiate members, Tau Kappa Epsilon contributes to the advancement of society through the personal growth of our members, and service to others. These traits are critical if we are to be great founders. I want them all to be safe from harm and to benefit from their TKE experiences. As we look forward to the future of Tau Kappa Epsilon and fraternities as a whole, the expectations of todays society are much higher than ever before. o US News has ranked as #5 on its list of most innovative national universities and among the top 20 in undergraduate teaching. This was after a three-year battle, where Wake Forest students played a leading role in efforts to overturn the ban on same-sex marriage ceremonies on campus. o How high do we want to go with enrollment? o Times Higher Education has ranked UMBC in the Top 100 of its Global 150 Under 50 Universities a ranking we no longer qualify for as of today! How can we address the great issues of our day? If you are unable to make a gift, share your time and your talent. As Grand Prytanis, I have experienced firsthand the amazing benefits our bond bestows upon those that choose to join. Frater Settles and I shared another bond besides TKE. Dr. Angelou founded so much good on our campus. The experiences that we share become the moments that unite us together as one TKE Nation. Why do we celebrate? Second, snobbiness was a thing which we, the Founders, disdained. I urge you to reengage with the Fraternity, to find new and creative ways to support Tau Kappa Epsilon with your time, talent, and treasure. TKE has continued to expand to new colleges and universities, with our new colony at University of Alaska Anchorage and charter issued to Upsilon-Omega Chapter at Santa Clara University. o Might we go the way of some other campuses that have welcomed alumni, especially older and retired alums, to live on campus to enjoy campus resources and to lend their time and talents to enrich the campus community? This is a moment that allows us to consider what our aspirations have been over the years; reflect on 50 years of growth, grit and greatness; celebrate all that we have achieved together; and aspire yet again as success is never final. For example, our Humanities and Social Sciences Forums explore key issues in our society. As the Grand Prytanis of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, I am only a temporary occupant of the Office I was elected to hold. Little did I know my first day on campus would lead me to fall rush. We are among the top 20 universities receiving NASA funding. It must be the compass by which we chart our course. But as men of courage we insisted in remaining true to our best convictions. Which is why we must also be globally minded people of the moment. She thanked me for explaining all the positive opportunities awaiting her son and for taking the time to ease her fears. If you are already engaged, can you reach out and encourage other Fraters to do the same? AOIIs sisterhood means many things to many people, but Founders Day holds a special significance to each of us. Thousands of Fraters have engaged with the Fraternity for Life in new ways. With 275,000-plus lifetime members, TKE makes a difference in the lives of thousands of men, from all across the world, each and every day. We have just launched the first Naval ROTC program in Maryland, with special support from Senator Mikulski. Mission will always illuminate the pathway of excellence. She was followed by political and civic leaders, best selling authors and media As a parent myself, I empathize with her and I know other parents must be feeling the same way too. Over the next several days, I found my first Teke family with Nathan White, Wes Newton, Mikey Kriese, Robert Luby, Kevin Major, and Walt Moody - my fellow candidates in the Rho-Omega chapter that fall of 1998 and all of whom would later become the newest Fraters of our chapter. Our fraternity has been made by the early initiates and this in itself was sufficient vindication of the policy we made use of in securing our first new members. It was the first Conclave since our founding that all five of them had been able to attend. I hope you are as excited and energized as I am to be at Utah State University for fall 2022. We anticipate that, with winter, spring, and summer enrollments, as well as students in UMBC Training Centers, we will serve a total of more than 20,000 students in the coming academic year. Four out of the last nine awards under the Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII) went to UMBC faculty. In Frater Settles vision of TKE, and the stern realities of life, there were no safe spaces or anything else developed from our over politically correct world. It was clear that the State needed more capacity for high-achieving students. o We have become a highly residential campus, with new and renovated residence halls and the Apartment Community Center (2013). Welcome to all alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends! Such an organization is none other than a fraternity in its truest sense. o How can we become the anchor institution for the region? Collegiate chapters broke recruitment records despite social distancing. For the first time in a generation since 1992, our chapters and colonies initiated more than 4,000 new men. All of these choices provide life lessons to ourselves while helping to provide a great TKE experience for our fellow Fraters. o With UMB, our strongest partnership, we continue to develop research collaborations through the seed grant program.
